Former Rockstar Dev Says GTA 6 Doesn’t Need Another Trailer, Let the Hype Speak for Itself

A former Rockstar developer believes GTA 6 is hyped enough without more trailers. With fans analyzing every detail and anticipation sky-high, Rockstar’s silence may be its most powerful marketing tool yet.

More than a year after the record-breaking debut of Grand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer, Rockstar Games has kept remarkably quiet. With no second trailer in sight, speculation and fan theories continue to swirl. But according to former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij, this silence might not just be intentional; it might also be brilliant.

Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009 and was part of the team behind Grand Theft Auto IV, recently took to social media to reflect on the 17th anniversary of GTA 4 and shared his opinion on Rockstar’s current marketing strategy for GTA 6. His verdict? “If it was my call I wouldn’t release any additional trailers,” he posted. “There is more than enough hype around VI and the element of surprise is going to make the release only bigger as an event.”

That hype is undeniable. The first GTA 6 trailer, released in December 2023, shattered YouTube records and stirred up a frenzy of speculation among fans. Conspiracy theories, from decoding bullet holes to analyzing moon phases, have become widespread, all in pursuit of clues about when Rockstar might finally unveil Trailer 2. But Vermeij believes Rockstar should embrace the mystery, even suggesting the company simply announce a release date without further promotional content. “It would be a boss move,” he added.

His comments echo the sentiments of Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, who said in a March interview that GTA 6 may have “the greatest anticipation I’ve ever seen for an entertainment property.” Zelnick explained that Rockstar prefers to release marketing materials closer to launch, balancing excitement with the power of unmet anticipation.

Adding to the discussion, former Rockstar animator Mike York speculated on his YouTube channel that the company’s silence is a deliberate tactic. He described the lack of updates as a clever way to encourage fan engagement through theories and discussions, keeping the community active without lifting a finger.

Although Vermeij hasn’t been involved with Rockstar since 2009 and claims to have no inside knowledge about GTA 6, he drew comparisons between its development and GTA 4’s last-minute delay in 2007. He predicted a similar “decision day” for GTA 6 might come close to its expected Fall 2025 launch, as hinted by Take-Two’s financial outlook.

Ultimately, the argument that Rockstar doesn’t need another trailer holds water. The anticipation has reached a boiling point without additional footage, and the game’s sheer cultural weight might be enough to carry it to monumental success. Whether Rockstar sticks to its silence or surprises fans with a new trailer remains to be seen, but for now, the mystery continues to fuel one of gaming’s most powerful hype trains.
