Death Stranding 2 Nears Completion as Kojima Teases Future Projects

Hideo Kojima confirms Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is 95% complete ahead of its June 26 release for PS5. Meanwhile, he teases Phase 2 of Kojima Productions, including the mysterious PHYSINT and an anime project.

With the highly anticipated Death Stranding 2: On the Beach set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5, Hideo Kojima has provided a promising update on the game’s development. In a recent episode of the Kojima Productions podcast, Kojima revealed that the sequel is approximately 95% complete. Comparing the development cycle to a 24-hour clock, he said the project is currently at “10 PM,” signaling that it’s in its final stages.

This update comes as a reassurance to fans who’ve been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Kojima’s genre-defying 2019 title, Death Stranding. Given its June release date, most expected the game to be nearly finished, but Kojima’s confirmation helps put concerns about potential delays to rest.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach continues the unique narrative-driven gameplay of its predecessor, which focused on traversal, isolation, and rebuilding connections in a fractured world. While plot specifics are still under wraps, trailers have teased a more action-focused experience, with returning characters and haunting visuals, continuing Kojima’s signature blend of philosophical storytelling and cinematic presentation.

Beyond Death Stranding 2, Kojima is already looking toward the future. He shared that once DS2 and another in-progress title, OD, are complete, Kojima Productions will enter what he calls “Phase 2.” This next chapter includes an ambitious new project titled PHYSINT, an action-espionage game that aims to blur the lines between video games and cinema.

Although details about PHYSINT are scarce, Kojima emphasized its unique approach, calling it a fusion of film and interactive media. Given his reputation for pushing boundaries—as seen in titles like Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding—expectations are high for whatever comes next.

Kojima also revealed plans to work on an anime as part of Phase 2, further expanding Kojima Productions’ creative footprint beyond video games. Meanwhile, OD, another mystery project in development, remains largely under wraps. However, Kojima did hint that it will be as experimental as his 2003 handheld title Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, which infamously used real-world sunlight as a gameplay mechanic. That title faced heavy skepticism during development, and Kojima suggests OD will be similarly unconventional.

All this signals an exciting time for Kojima Productions. While Death Stranding 2 is almost ready for its debut, the studio is already preparing to embark on new creative frontiers. Kojima’s latest comments not only offer a development milestone for DS2 but also set the stage for an ambitious and unpredictable future—one that fans of boundary-breaking experiences will surely want to keep an eye on.
