NetherRealm Studios confirms that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive new DLC characters or story expansions. The team is shifting focus to their next major project, possibly Injustice 3, leaving fans with mixed reactions.
NetherRealm Studios has officially confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive any new DLC characters or story content. While balance patches and technical support will continue, the studio has decided to dedicate its resources to developing its next major project.
The announcement, made via Mortal Kombat‘s official social media channels, follows months of speculation fueled by the sudden launch of the Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition—a bundle that includes all post-launch content released so far. Although expected by some fans, the confirmation still came as a disappointment, especially considering prior developer promises of long-term support.
Launched in September 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, Mortal Kombat 1 aimed to reboot the iconic franchise’s timeline. The game introduced Kameo Fighters, a fresh Invasions mode, and a seasonal format. Despite its visually striking presentation and engaging story, the game was met with criticism for balance issues, bugs, and aggressive monetization.
In September 2024, NetherRealm released the Khaos Reigns expansion along with Kombat Pack 2, but both offerings were panned for their high price and lack of substantial content. Rumors circulated about further DLC and even a Kombat Pack 3, but those appear to have been shelved due to poor sales performance.
The final content drop for Mortal Kombat 1 was the T-1000 guest character in March 2025. This release, coming a year and a half after the base game, now marks the official end of major post-launch support.
NetherRealm Studios acknowledged fan frustration in a statement: “We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.” While the studio has not revealed what this new project is, speculation heavily leans toward Injustice 3, the next installment in their DC fighting series.
The announcement is reminiscent of how support ended for Mortal Kombat 11, which saw its final DLC release roughly two years after launch. This time, however, the window of content for Mortal Kombat 1 has closed sooner—just under 20 months post-launch—causing some players to feel misled, especially in light of earlier comments from Creative Director Ed Boon, who previously assured fans of long-term support.
Despite the community’s divided reactions, the Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition remains a solid option for newcomers. It includes all paid DLC, the Khaos Reigns expansion, and special movie-themed skins, offering a complete experience in one package.
While longtime fans may be disappointed by the lack of further expansions, many are now turning their attention to what NetherRealm Studios will reveal next. Whether it’s Injustice 3 or another surprise, expectations are high for the studio’s future.
