Hideki Kamiya Wants to Remake Devil May Cry from the Ground Up with Capcom

Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya is back at Capcom and eager to remake the original 2001 game using modern technology and design. Could a DMC revival be on the horizon?

Legendary game designer Hideki Kamiya, the mind behind Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Viewtiful Joe, has expressed a strong desire to remake the original Devil May Cry using today’s technology and game design standards. Now reunited with Capcom through his new studio Clovers, Kamiya shared his thoughts in a recent episode of his YouTube series, where he answers fan questions and reflects on his iconic works.

While currently focused on developing a sequel to Ōkami, Kamiya was asked by a fan whether he’d ever consider remaking the 2001 classic Devil May Cry. His response was enthusiastic and clear: “Of course I’d love to do that.” Though he admitted he rarely revisits his own games, he occasionally watches gameplay clips of the original DMC and feels its design has become visibly outdated after nearly 24 years.

Kamiya emphasized that if given the chance, he would want to rebuild Devil May Cry “from the ground up,” leveraging modern technology and updated gameplay sensibilities. However, he clarified that no official plans are in place, and he hasn’t started conceptualizing changes, simply because he doesn’t invest serious creative thought unless a project is confirmed. “If the time comes, I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do!” he said with confidence.

The original Devil May Cry is often credited with creating the “character action” subgenre: stylish, fast-paced games that emphasize combos, enemy variety, and high-skill gameplay. Since then, the genre has evolved through titles like Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear Rising, and Kamiya’s own Bayonetta. While Devil May Cry 5 (2019) brought the series into a new era with modern gameplay and multiple protagonists, the original entry remains untouched aside from HD ports and the divisive reimagining DmC: Devil May Cry.

Kamiya’s return to Capcom comes at a time when the publisher is well-known for successful remakes, especially of its Resident Evil series. Given that precedent, and Kamiya’s passion, a Devil May Cry remake doesn’t seem impossible, especially with Kamiya publicly requesting Capcom’s blessing, even going so far as to say, “Capcom—please leave it to me!” He also added, “Let me handle Viewtiful Joe, too,” showing interest in reviving more of his past creations.

With series producer Hideaki Itsuno having left Capcom after Devil May Cry 5 and moved on to Dragon’s Dogma 2, the franchise’s future remains uncertain. Kamiya’s involvement could be exactly what the series needs to return with renewed energy. And with a successful Devil May Cry anime adaptation on Netflix reigniting interest in the franchise, now may be the perfect time for Capcom to hand the reins back to its original creator.

Whether or not this remake becomes reality, Kamiya’s enthusiasm and creative spark continue to excite fans who hope to see Dante’s legendary adventure reborn for a new generation.
