Giant Skull’s New D&D Game Promises Unique Adventure, Not a Baldur’s Gate Successor

Giant Skull, led by Stig Asmussen, is developing a new Dungeons & Dragons game. Wizards of the Coast confirms it’s not a Baldur’s Gate successor but aims to appeal to both D&D fans and action game players.

Giant Skull, the studio behind God of War 3 and Star Wars Jedi titles, is developing a new Dungeons & Dragons game in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, but it will not serve as a successor to the Baldur’s Gate series. In a recent interview with The Game Business, Wizards of the Coast president John Hight clarified that while the Baldur’s Gate franchise will eventually see a new entry, Giant Skull’s project is an entirely separate endeavor aimed at reaching a broad audience.

“The universe of Dungeons & Dragons is vast, allowing players and developers to tell a wide range of stories,” Hight said. “Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game, and of course, we’re going to do a successor. But this project with Stig and his team is not that. We want to create a game that appeals to D&D players by helping them realize their imagination, while also attracting fans of action games like God of War and the Jedi series.”

Hight emphasized that D&D serves as a creative playground, with hundreds of millions of people worldwide either playing or being familiar with the franchise. Giant Skull’s title is intended to leverage this universal appeal while introducing D&D to a wider gaming audience. The project also represents Wizards of the Coast’s broader strategy to collaborate with both established veterans and up-and-coming studios, experimenting with new ideas and giving smaller teams opportunities to grow.

Studio head Stig Asmussen highlighted that Giant Skull’s expertise in third-person melee combat will be central to the new game. “We’re experts at melee combat, and that experience translates very well to D&D,” Asmussen explained. He also noted that the team is building the project on a vanilla version of Unreal Engine 5, providing a clean slate that allows rapid development and flexibility. The approach aims to minimize technical debt and give the team the freedom to innovate.

While details about gameplay mechanics and story remain limited, it is clear that the new D&D project is designed to merge action-focused combat with the rich storytelling of the tabletop RPG universe. Hight stressed that the goal is to create a title that resonates with longtime D&D fans while remaining accessible to players who may not have prior experience with the franchise.

The collaboration between Giant Skull and Wizards of the Coast has been underway for some time, reflecting a long-term vision to expand D&D’s presence in the digital gaming space. Asmussen’s team is leveraging its experience in narrative-driven action games to bring D&D’s fantasy world to life, balancing complex combat systems with deep storytelling potential.

Ultimately, this new project represents a fresh approach to Dungeons & Dragons video games. By combining the expertise of seasoned developers with the flexibility of Unreal Engine 5 and the expansive D&D universe, Giant Skull aims to deliver an experience that is both innovative and faithful to the spirit of the tabletop classic. Fans of action games and D&D alike can anticipate a unique adventure that stands apart from Baldur’s Gate while honoring the imaginative core of the franchise.
