Sucker Punch confirms Ghost of Yōtei offers a similar scale, scope, and time commitment as Ghost of Tsushima. From story length to side activities, discover what to expect from the highly anticipated PS5 sequel.
Sucker Punch Productions has pulled back the curtain on its upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ghost of Yōtei, revealing that the game will offer a similar scale, scope, and time commitment as its critically acclaimed predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima. Whether you’re focused on the main story or chasing every collectible and trophy, Ghost of Yōtei is expected to match Tsushima in depth and breadth.
In a recent interview with VGC, co-director Jason Connell explained the studio’s deliberate approach to designing Ghost of Yōtei around the same structural foundation that made Ghost of Tsushima a fan favorite. “We designed the game with some of the similar numbers, in terms of scale and scope of the last experience, in mind,” Connell stated. “In that way, we actually found it to be quite satisfying, and there were some good numbers to jump off of.”
Ghost of Tsushima’s main story typically takes about 25 hours to complete, while completionists can expect around 60–62 hours of total gameplay, based on estimates from HowLongToBeat. Ghost of Yōtei is expected to follow a comparable timeline, catering to different types of players, from those who prefer to “just rip through the story” to dedicated explorers and “hardcore Platinum chasers.”
Connell emphasized that the overall time investment for Ghost of Yōtei would remain in line with Tsushima, even as new gameplay systems and activities are introduced. “We feel that the experience of playing through Ghost of Yōtei… is a similar experience, we expect, in terms of the time commitment,” he said. This signals that the sequel won’t try to artificially inflate its runtime but will offer a robust experience built on meaningful exploration and engaging side content.
Launching October 2nd, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yōtei follows the story of protagonist Atsu, who is tasked with hunting down and eliminating the deadly Yōtei Six. In addition to the main narrative, players can engage in a variety of side activities across the open world, including traditional Bamboo Strikes, coin games, and drinking games.
The world will also offer investigative opportunities for Atsu to track down upgrades and take on bounties for rewards, adding layers of strategic depth and player agency. While details on the full extent of side content remain under wraps, Sucker Punch has made it clear that players will find plenty of opportunities to stray from the beaten path.
With its balance of story-driven gameplay and open-world exploration, Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be a spiritual and mechanical successor to Ghost of Tsushima; designed to satisfy returning fans and welcome new ones into its beautiful, deadly world.
