A leak may have revealed the pricing for Asus’ upcoming ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. With premium specs and Xbox integration, the devices could cost €599 and €899, but fans are divided over the steep price tags.
Asus and Microsoft’s upcoming handheld gaming PCs, ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, have reportedly had their prices leaked ahead of an official announcement. According to a report by Spanish outlet 3DJuegos, the base Xbox Ally will cost €599, while the more powerful Ally X version is priced at €899. The leak appears to have originated from Asus itself, after product metadata briefly appeared on Google and in search results from the Spanish Asus store.
While the pricing has yet to be officially confirmed, the leak aligns closely with Asus’ existing ROG Ally lineup. The €599 tag for the base model translates to approximately $599 USD, with the Ally X potentially hitting $899 in North America. This puts both devices squarely in the premium handheld category; more expensive than the Nintendo Switch 2 and even the most powerful Steam Deck OLED model, which tops out at $649.
Spec-wise, the ROG Xbox Ally features a Ryzen Z2 APU, 16 GB of LPDDR5X-6400 RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. The ROG Xbox Ally X, on the other hand, will come equipped with the new Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM, and 1 TB of storage. Both models sport a 7-inch 1080p LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate and will run on a customized version of Windows 11, optimized for handheld use via a revamped Xbox app.
In an interview, Asus’ marketing lead Whitson Gordon explained the choice to use LCD displays instead of OLED. While OLED offers superior visual quality, Gordon emphasized the importance of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for gaming performance; something OLED currently struggles with at a reasonable cost and power consumption. “If a display doesn’t have VRR, it’s not a gaming display in 2025,” he stated.
The pricing leak has stirred a wide range of reactions online. Some fans expressed excitement about the high-performance handhelds, but many others balked at the steep price, particularly for a portable console. Comments like “What is Microsoft smoking?” and “This will be a hard sell” have appeared across Reddit threads, reflecting growing concerns about affordability in a post-pandemic market.
The devices are rumored to launch in October, with pre-orders possibly starting in August. The timing may line up with Gamescom 2025 in Germany, a major event often used by Microsoft for key PC and hardware announcements.
While these leaked prices may not be final, they offer a strong indicator of where Asus and Microsoft are positioning the ROG Xbox Ally devices: as premium-tier handheld gaming PCs, aimed at enthusiasts looking for power, portability, and Xbox ecosystem integration. Whether players will be willing to pay the price remains to be seen.
