Splitgate 2’s open beta arrives May 22 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and last-gen consoles with over 25 weapons, 15+ maps, 10+ modes, crossplay, and the promise of “infinite” maps.
Fans of fast-paced sci-fi shooters, get ready; Splitgate 2 is entering open beta on May 22, and it’s packed with fresh content and surprises. Developer 1047 Games is rolling out the beta across PC (Steam and Epic Games), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and even last-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). Best of all, full cross-platform multiplayer is supported, ensuring a large, unified player base.
The upcoming open beta builds significantly on what was offered in the alpha. 1047 Games has confirmed more than 25 weapons, including the brand-new Borealis, an energy carbine-style power weapon. This marks a notable expansion from the original game’s arsenal, adding depth to both casual and competitive play.
The beta will also include over 15 maps, with two standout additions: Drought and Fracture, massive 24-player arenas specifically built for the newly introduced Onslaught mode. However, what really grabbed the community’s attention is the teaser for “infinite” maps. While the studio hasn’t detailed exactly what this means, strong hints suggest the arrival of a custom map editor, opening the door for limitless community-generated content. If that’s true, it could redefine Splitgate 2’s longevity and creativity.
More than 10 game modes will be available during the beta, including returning fan-favorites like Takedown. In this mode, teams battle in elimination-style rounds where victory hinges on wiping out the entire enemy squad before they can respawn. Another highlight includes Hotzone, a King of the Hill-style mode praised for its chaotic, strategic action.
1047 Games is clear about its goal with Splitgate 2: to evolve from being “Halo meets Portal” to carving out its own unique identity. CEO Ian Proulx acknowledges the early comparisons were helpful for gaining traction but insists the sequel is moving toward a standalone experience, supported by strong post-launch content in a live-service model.
The alpha test earlier this year showed promising results with over 500,000 matches played, 20 million portals opened, and 59 million kills logged. One particularly amusing stat? Over a million “BFB bonks”, referring to the game’s oversized melee weapon that channels Doom’s BFG.
Players who missed the alpha will find much more to do in this open beta. While a final release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, the full game is expected to launch later this year as a free-to-play title, with optional cosmetics and a likely battle pass system.
To stay updated or join the beta, players can wishlist the game via Splitgate.com on their platform of choice. With exciting weapons, chaotic new maps, and the potential for infinite user-generated content, Splitgate 2 is shaping up to be a major contender in the competitive shooter space.
