Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, promises Sucker Punch’s most expansive and nature-filled world yet. Set in historic Ezo, players will embark on a deeply personal journey when the game launches on October 2 for PS5.
Sucker Punch Productions, the celebrated studio behind Ghost of Tsushima, is ready to transport players once again to feudal Japan with Ghost of Yōtei. Set for release on October 2 for PS5, Ghost of Yōtei marks a significant evolution for the studio, promising the most open and immersive world it has ever created.
Players will take on the role of Atsu, a warrior seeking vengeance against the Yōtei Six, who massacred her family and left her for dead. Unlike its predecessor, Ghost of Yōtei offers a less linear structure. Atsu will pursue leads across the untamed land of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), choosing which member of the Yōtei Six to target first. This non-linear approach, combined with a more intricate and expansive world, ensures that every player’s journey feels unique.
Speaking to Variety, creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox emphasized how Ezo itself becomes a central character in the game. Nate Fox shared, “This is the most open game we’ve ever made. One of the greatest joys is just getting lost. You let your curiosity guide you through the landscape. We view that as this holy moment that we want to uplift players so they can feel very present inside Hokkaido.” Ezo is designed as a living, breathing environment, filled with hidden secrets, varied biomes, and countless stories waiting to be uncovered.
Jason Connell added that the decision to set the game in such a wild and rural region opens new storytelling opportunities. “It’s so wild and nature-filled. There are so many majestic and beautiful locations to bring to life. We had to cherry-pick the best spots to create a breathtaking experience for players.”
In addition to the expanded exploration, players will have a wolf companion to assist them in battle, further deepening the bond between character and environment. Non-combat activities, a beloved feature from Ghost of Tsushima, also return to offer moments of peace amidst Atsu’s bloody quest for revenge.
Ghost of Yōtei will also support PS5 Pro features from day one. Pre-orders begin on May 2, with exciting bonuses including PSN avatar sets and special armor. Collectors can opt for the lavish Collector’s Edition, which includes physical treasures like an Atsu mask, a replica Tsuba, a pouch of coins, and instructions for playing the traditional game Zeni Hajiki.
With Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch is not just offering a sequel — it’s delivering a deeper, richer experience that celebrates freedom, nature, and the spirit of discovery. Players can prepare to lose themselves in the wild heart of Ezo when the game launches this fall.
